Zelensky, Trump and EU leaders agreed on five principles for ending the war: what exactly

08/13/2025

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that during a video conference with President Donald Trump, European leaders and the NATO Secretary General,
five common principles for ending the war were agreed upon. He said the American leader expressed his readiness to provide security guarantees to Kyiv.

What positions were agreed upon with Trump?

Zelensky said that during the video conference with Trump, five common principles were agreed upon regarding the end of Russia’s war against Ukraine:

– Everything that concerns Ukraine is discussed only with Ukraine.

– Preparation of a trilateral format of negotiations (with the participation of the leaders of Ukraine, the USA and the Russian Federation).

– First of all, a ceasefire and security guarantees.

– The Russian Federation should not have the right to veto Ukraine’s membership in NATO.

– Strengthening sanctions in the event of Russia’s refusal to accept a ceasefire during the Alaska summit.

“Today we discussed our common positions with the US President. There was a coordination conversation before that, as I told you. We agreed on five general principles,” the president said.

And he emphasized: everything that concerns Ukraine should be discussed exclusively with Ukraine.

“We must prepare a trilateral format for the conversation. There must be security guarantees and they must be strengthened if Russia does not agree to a ceasefire in Alaska. This is the effectiveness of today’s battle. I told the US President and all our European colleagues that Putin is bluffing. He is trying to put pressure on all directions of the Ukrainian front before the meeting in Alaska,” the Ukrainian leader said.

According to Zelensky, Russia is trying to portray itself as capable of occupying all of Ukraine. Putin is also bluffing that sanctions are not important to him and that they are “not working.”

“In fact, sanctions are very helpful and are hitting the Russian military economy. Yes, that’s true. Russia has several times more weapons. In particular, artillery – three times. But Russia also has three times more losses. And this is a fact. I told my colleagues and the US president and European friends that Putin definitely does not want peace. He wants the state. And we all really understand this,” the head of state assured.

He added that Putin will not be able to deceive anyone and called for continued pressure for peace.

It’s not just about American sanctions, but also about European ones, the president noted:

“And together, our alliance of partners can really stop Putin’s war. We talked about the meeting in Alaska. We hope that the central topic of the meeting will be a ceasefire. An immediate ceasefire. The US president has said this repeatedly.”

Zelensky said that Trump suggested that he meet with him after the meeting with Putin in Alaska to discuss “all the results, if there are any.”

“And we will determine our next, mutual steps. Now we will have a meeting of the “coalition of the willing”. This is really our goal. This is what we are working for. Thank you to everyone who helps us,” Zelenskyy concluded.

Negotiations ahead of Trump-Putin summit

On August 13, Zelensky held a video conference with Trump, the NATO Secretary General, and European leaders regarding a diplomatic end to the war and the upcoming summit in Alaska.

As OBOZ.UA reported, the President of Ukraine stated that his position on the territories occupied by Russia is unchanged, and rejected the transfer of unoccupied Donbas lands to the Russian Federation.

At the same time, French President Emmanuel Macron said that at present “there are no serious plans for a territorial exchange.”
