The law regulates the use of cannabis only in medical, industrial and scientific activities.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky signed a law on the legalization of medical cannabis . This is evidenced by information on the Verkhovna Rada website .

The card of the law (“On regulating the circulation of plants of the hemp genus (Cannabis) for medical, industrial purposes, scientific and scientific-technical activities to create conditions for expanding patient access to the necessary treatment of cancer and post-traumatic stress disorders resulting from war”) notes that the document was returned with the signature of the head of state on February 13, 2024.

What else is known about this law:

As UNIAN reported, on June 28, 2023, Vladimir Zelensky said in parliament that the country needs to develop the industry of mental and physical rehabilitation.

In July, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine voted in the first reading for the government bill on the legalization of medical cannabis – 268 people’s deputies voted “For”. 

Discussions continued in society about the advisability of adopting this law. Deputy of the Health Committee Olga Stefanishina noted that it is now important for helping soldiers relieve pain from combat wounds. At the end of December, deputies voted for the law in the second reading.

The distribution of marijuana for recreational consumption will continue to be considered a crime and will be prosecuted by the police, and only legal entities that have the appropriate documents will be able to grow it . Medicines based on medical cannabis can only be obtained by electronic prescription.
