Hi Uncle Trump,
Can I call you that? In our village, we call all older men “uncle,” even if we’re not related.
They call me “The Cat.” It’s a callsign. Everyone in the army has one.
But don’t let the uniform fool you — I’m not a soldier by nature.
I wasn’t born a warrior, and I didn’t choose this profession — and yet here I am, in my fifth year of it…
This is a letter from an ordinary village boy who once studied well in school, became a writer, a bit of a painter, and even a poet.
Because I had to put on a uniform and pick up a weapon.
Uncle Donald, here’s what I wanted to say:
You’re the leader of the greatest country in the world — the “Land of Dreams,” as millions of people used to call it.
And when you were preparing to lead it, you said something very powerful:
“I will end the war in UA.”
And millions of people in a bleeding country believed you.
You gave them (us!) hope.
But now what, Uncle Trump?
They say you’re ready to turn your back on us?
That recent phone call of yours to terrorists changed nothing.
On the contrary — they threw it back in your face.
They made it clear that your opinion doesn’t matter to them.
Putin made it clear he doesn’t want peace.
First, by bombing civilian cities instead of agreeing to a ceasefire.
And finally — he said it directly to you in that phone call.
He rejected you, the President of the most powerful (once?) nation on Earth.
He laughed at you.
At you, and at America — a country his once feared like the wrath of God…
And what did you do?
You once said, “If Putin refuses, I’ll give Ukraine so many weapons, he’ll regret it!”
But now you’re turning away, pretending none of this happened?
That it’s not your problem?
That it’s somehow our fault he invaded?
Let me remind you, Uncle Donald: It’s your problem.
You represent the country that once took our nuclear weapons,
and in exchange promised us protection.
What — that wasn’t you?
Maybe. But it was your country.
Your representative made that promise on your behalf.
America gave us security guarantees.
And what did we get?
“Here, instead of nukes, have a few shells. Good luck fighting!”
We said thank you.
At least your predecessor helped.
But you?
Now you’re saying even that help will stop?
That’s betrayal, Uncle Trump.
A betrayal of your word.
A betrayal of your promise.
And no one likes traitors.
No one trusts them.
And they don’t get respect — because who respects someone who doesn’t keep their word?
Uncle Trump, please wake up!
Those who bow to murderers and terrorists for the sake of “peace” — while leaving the victims behind — will be forever shamed.
They — and their country.
Because right now, you’re not just a man.
You are the “face of democracy”.
Of justice.
Stand — because we are still standing.

So beautiful, so sincere, so desperate, and yet ineffective.
Not because the words are weak, but because their addressee is deaf to anything that doesn’t sound like applause, power, or money. An appeal for humanity falls on deaf ears for someone who considers humanity weakness.
The letter strikes at the heart; but only in those who still have one.
Trump, on the other hand, only hears himself, counting votes, donations, and headlines.
Ethical responsibility?
Historical memory?
No relevance in his cosmos.
The fact that a Ukrainian soldier in uniform is writing to him isn’t a moral wake-up call for him, but at best PR noise.
At the very latest, he switches off at the word “responsibility”; that was never his topic.
The bitterness remains:
The letter shows how much hope once rested on America and how deep the fall is when one realizes that a country that promised freedom falls silent precisely when it needs to be defended.

Has the U.S. prioritized its relationship with 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚 over the freedom of people in the region all this time?
Perhaps the so-called ‘stability’ of partnering with 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞, 𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚, has been seen as more valuable than the values it claims to promote – such as freedom, the rule of law, and democracy.
What happened?
On August 1, 1991 – just three weeks before Ukraine’s Declaration of Independence and four months before the December referendum in which 92% of Ukrainians voted to withdraw from the Soviet Union – U.S. President George H. W. Bush delivered a speech in Kyiv, Ukraine, later labeled the ‘Chicken Kiev’ speech.
(This is the only time in history I prefer to keep using ‘Kiev’ – because it’s so bad and distorted, it fits perfectly.)
The speech was full of condescending lectures to Ukrainians about self-determination, delivered from the transatlantic perspective – ‘as if they always know best’. It attempted to encourage Ukrainians to remain under moscow’s influence, to stay united, and not to take any “foolish” actions without the support of Ukraine’s peaceful independence movement or that of any other republic.
👀 What do we see now in 2025?
The day before, Bush visited moscow and assured Gorbachev of his full support for transforming the USSR into a democratic, social, and market-oriented federal state… It was a great time when Bush and his wife relaxing and having an informal chat with Gorbachev and his wife at a dacha outside moscow…
🚩 “The heir of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and others arrives … and carries on propaganda in favor of the Union Treaty. Why didn’t he call on Kuwait to sign the Union Treaty with Iraq?”
🚩 “Bush came here in effect as a messenger for Gorbachev.”
🚩 “Bush does not understand that we are fighting against a totalitarian state.”
Maybe the U.S. has been mistaken about 𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚 all along-always, in fact.
For us here in Eastern Europe, the answer is a clear ‘yes’.
P.S. In today’s context, I suggest using “Chicken Kiev” to describe those who, while enjoying freedom themselves, deny others the same chance – becoming complete hypocrites. Those who are willing to compromise their values to appease dictators for short-term personal gain.

Yana, the average American doesn’t have an understanding of what Ukraine is going through. I’m not sure the administration fully understands what Ukraine is going through either. The administration made a promise to the American people to end the war in a rather unrealistic time frame and can’t back out of the promise. Therefore, achieving peace at all costs and without the interests of Ukraine and the Ukrainians is the goal of the administration.
However, we, the Army and Marine vets who are serving in the International Legion or who have served, have a better and more accurate understanding of the plight of the Ukrainian people. My story and that of other American vets are not told anywhere and, oftentimes, no one wants to hear them. Makes me angry really…
