A member of Yakutia’s parliament, Alexandra Ivanova, said that after the collapse of the Soviet Union, many Yakuts discussed the idea of secession from Russia, but the people, he said, “were not ready,” RTVI reported.
“The Russian people lived under the Tatar-Mongol yoke for 300 years. What did they dream of? They dreamed of being free, right? They went through very big historical events to get to the point of being a free people. And if you ask any Yakut, “Would you want that in the future?”, I will say, “Yes.” But you ask, “Are you ready now?”, I will say, “No”,” Ivanov said.
He said the people of Yakutia are “not alone” in such ideas.
