A number of European countries are participants in this initiative.

Ukraine’s military is set to receive the first of hundreds of thousands of 155mm artillery shells as part of an international effort to supply foreign supplies, as US efforts to send more aid remain stalled in Congress .

According to Bloomberg, Ukraine could see the first shells within a few weeks as part of this initiative, according to which the Czech Republic acts as an intermediary connecting governments willing to finance the purchase of excess 155 mm shells in third countries. This was announced by Jan Iresh, the country’s director general for defense policy and strategy.

He said that a number of European countries are participants in this initiative. He did not specify which countries are financing the purchases or whose supplies are being used, but said the shipments would most likely be disclosed once they arrive.

“The initiative of the Czech Republic is one way to show that we are really doing something, and not waiting for something to happen on the hill,” Ireš said.

Shells for Ukraine – details

Czech President Petr Pavel told the Munich Security Conference last month that his country had found 500,000 155mm and 300,000 122mm shells that could be delivered within weeks if the money was made available.

European leaders discussed a Czech proposal to buy ammunition from countries outside the region at a meeting in Paris on Monday. The Netherlands agreed to contribute 100 million euros ($109 million) to the plan. The government in Prague said it had also secured preliminary commitments from Canada and Denmark, as well as other countries that did not wish to be named.

  1. Damn, a few weeks! How much of that is caused by effing paperwork? Why should it take more than two days for the first shells to arrive by air transport? This is still looking way too much like peacetime snafu! ☹
