The United States and partners are discussing options for responding to Russia’s involvement of North Korean troops.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will not be able to win the war in Ukraine, even with the help of soldiers from the DPRK , US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said at a briefing , noting that the US and partners are discussing options for responding to Russia’s involvement of North Korean troops.

“We take this very seriously. We call on the Kremlin to change course. We fully understand the security implications for both Europe and the Indo-Pacific region. Putin will not win in Ukraine, even with more help from North Korea,” the Pentagon chief stressed.

Austin did not specify what specific steps the US is taking to respond to the dispatch of North Korean troops to Russia. He also noted that he could not yet say specifically whether they would be involved in combat, but once again expressed “great concern” about this fact.

“But if they are brought in, that is a big concern. And so we are very concerned that they are going to use those troops in combat,” he said.

He noted that the DPRK sent about 10,000 soldiers to train in Russia, and the Russian Federation equips these soldiers with clothing and weapons from its army.

“Russia has signed UN Security Council resolutions committing not to provide military assistance to North Korea. Of course, we know that Putin has gone to great lengths to obtain weapons from North Korea and Iran,” Austin said.
