Why Did Donald Trump Impose Sanctions on Russia?

It was the first time in the Trump Presidency. The decision did not occur in a vacuum. Putin embarrassed the U.S. president.

The last three weeks have been a series of twists and turns in the history of U.S. relations with Russia and Ukraine. It began with President Trump’s surprising pivot three weeks ago, when he called Putin a “paper tiger,” spoke of Ukraine’s ability to win the war and reclaim all land stolen by Russia, and even floated the possible sale of Tomahawks from the U.S. to Kyiv. Then came a complete about-face last week, following a friendly call from Putin.

But today, events took yet another unexpected turn. Trump’s much touted Budapest meeting proved to be a Kremlin ruse at the president’s expense. In the wake of the Moscow’s public humiliation of President Trump, the U.S. leader has now decided to impose real sanctions on Moscow—immediately.

That’s good news for America, Ukraine and the free world. True, it not a game changer. Nor does it make up for ten months of abandonment and foreign policy chaos to Ukraine, but it is a meaningful sanction that strikes at the heart of the funding of the Russian war machine, and a welcome measure for advocates of freedom.

Listen to my commentary on why this happened in the clip below.

When we speak of Ukraine – we begin with the subject of love.

During my recent interview with Operator Starsky on our film Kyiv of Mine, he asked me a great question which I paraphrase: “When others talk about Ukraine, they begin with the war. In Kyiv of Mine, you begin with love. Why?”

Here is my answer:

The Responsibility of Republican Leadership Who Know Better

A very unfortunate trend amongst Republicans leaders on Capital Hill who know better, is to blame Zelensky for inadequate messaging with the White House, but maintain radio silence in the face of their duties to directly address the White House when messages like the Truth Social post below are published:

Here is a news flash: When the president demands that Ukrainians to just stop and go home — the world perceives him as having the educational level of an illiterate second grader.

It is a form of messaging that is a humiliation to our country. Someone needs to have the guts to tell him the truth. The “peace in our time” comments of Chamberlain in 1939 feel like the words of Solomon compared to this incoherent messaging.

The priority messaging to the president should include:

  1. The war is not a border dispute between angry parties. It is a horrific crime. Russia is a criminal nation of terrorists who have committed a war crime by invading a sovereign nation. This is not about two people who hate each other. It is not a disagreement among adults. Yes, Mr. President Russians should go home, but Ukrainians are home, and to suggest otherwise humiliates the United States of America.
  2. The war ends when Russia stops. If Ukraine stops without Russia stopping we will see a level of rapes and murders unlike anything the world has witnessed since Russia entered Berlin in 1945, except far worse. We will see tens of millions of refugees fleeing to Europe. We will see mass murder on an epic scale. And the implications for America will make the the open borders migrant problem look like child’s play. This form of White House messaging needs to end. When the world hears our president suggest that Ukraine “just stop,” they assume we are a nation of fools who may have big guns, but are easily defeated ignoramuses.

The focus of Republicans on Capitol Hill, in Congress, and elsewhere must be on their duties to the president and the people, not their perception of Zelensky’s shortcomings.

Trump’s statement is pure spin: He dodges blame, rewrites history, and throws out peace slogans to distract from the facts: Russia invaded, Ukraine defends, and Trump’s “deal-making” is just another self-serving show.

The elephant in the room is that Putin will never stop and negotiate, because his domestic survival depends on handing Ukraine over to the ruZZians. If he fails, they’ll have him. Putin will never accept peace unless forced to do so by overwhelming military force.

Most Europeans rely on Article 5 for protection. Putin doesn’t seem to care. One of them must be wrong!

Ukraine is the largest country in Europe, with the biggest and most experienced army, but it’s the least well-equipped. Correcting this problem is currently the top priority for strengthening European security. EUROPE’S GEOGRAPHY UNDERSCORES UKRAINE’S STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE TO ITS SAFETY.

Ukraine & Europe complement each other well militarily.

Ukraine would be a MUCH MORE RELIABLE ALLY for Europe than the U.S., if she’s strong & still around… & there is NO NUMBER THREE!

The Freedom of Ukraine is the KEY EXISTENTIAL MATTER for the FREEDOM IN EUROPE ! IT MUST BE SECURED NOW, & Putin’s ‘multipolar world dream’ will fall like a house of cards, which it is! The ruZZian threat will be kept at bay EVERYWHERE in Central Europe, in the Middle East, in Africa & in the Arctic! Xi Jinping would learn not to mess with us!

The U.S. & ruZZia are signatories to the Helsinki Accords. Putin is violating every point of these Accords, tries to persuade the West to join him in these violations &/or formally accept his violations. It’ll not hold up & SUCH HINTS ARE DlSGRACΣFUL!

From the Helsinki Accords title in Wikipedia:

“Declaration on Principles Guiding Relations between Participating States” (also known as “The Decalogue”) enumerated the following 10 points:
I. Sovereign equality, respect for the rights inherent in sovereignty
II. Refraining from the threat or use of force
III. Inviolability of frontiers
IV. Territorial integrity of states
V. Peaceful settlement of disputes
VI. Non-intervention in internal affairs
VII. Respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief
VIII. Equal rights and self-determination of peoples
IX. Co-operation among States
X. Fulfillment in good faith of obligations under international law <<

“Claim victory”? Putin?
Why should an aggressor be allowed to win anything?
How could it be suggested that the victim country should allow to have their territory taken over by a fascist?
Ukraine did not start this war, ruZZia did. An they did not start in 2022 either, they started in 2014 when they invaded Crimea.
The only acceptable terms might be for ruZZia to leave all of Ukraine, pay reparations for all damage and death caused, have the war criminals stand trials, not have ANY conditions regarding Ukraine joining NATO. Of course that is my interpretation of what Ukraine would be fully justified to expect, but the final decision ought to be Ukrainians’, and ONLY Ukrainians’.

Herbert Jank

Go home? The Ukrainians are already home. If they accept one of Trumps Putin favoring deals they will soon not have a home anymore. The cruelties will not stop in the occupied territories. We have seen that in Africa, where immediately ethnical cleansing, rape, child abduction and other cruelties began once the Russian had the control. Or in the territories, the Russians had to move out, where international observers found mass graves or people shot in the streets.

The only one that has to go home is Russia. Home behind the borders before the invasion.

  1. Taco’s “TS” statement can be translated as follows: Thugs enter your home, demolish large swaths of it, slaughters a couple of your family members, carts off loot, and rapes one of your children. The cops come and tell you, stop defending yourself. To the murderers, they say, you can keep what you stole if you stop killing more of the family and destroying their house.

Taco is a full-blown, brainless and uncompassionate idiot. But, we knew this already.
