At the same time, the Trump administration envisages maintaining contributions only for certain organizations, such as the IAEA and ICAO.
The administration of US President Donald Trump is planning to sharply cut funding for NATO and the UN, according to a new budget memorandum.
As reported by the Washington Post , the White House is proposing to radically cut US foreign policy funding, including financial support for international organizations. According to the document, it is planned to:

- a reduction in funding for international organizations by almost 90%, in particular, it is planned to stop contributions to the UN, NATO and 20 other structures;
- a complete shutdown of peacekeeping programs funded by the US through the UN, citing “recent mission failures.”
At the same time, the document provides for the preservation of contributions only for certain organizations, such as the IAEA and ICAO.
Experts and officials are concerned about the Trump administration’s proposal. Julianne Smith, a former U.S. ambassador to NATO, noted:
“This really affects the foundation of how the alliance works and could deal a devastating blow to the unity of the alliance.”
The document also proposes integrating USAID into the State Department and reducing the overall foreign policy budget by 48% (to $28.4 billion). If adopted, funding for humanitarian aid would be cut by 54% and global health by 55%.
The budget has not yet been approved by Congress. The State Department warns of the risk of mass layoffs, consulate closures, and staff demoralization.
“Essentially, this is the destruction of our international instruments of influence,” said Brett Bruen, a former State Department official.

Trump will back off his negotiating position once Congress gets involved. But, he might just get it with respect to the UNnecessary
