The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of concluding certain economic and other agreements with Russia even before the end of the war in Ukraine. These are agreements that could be concluded regardless of the achievement of a full peace agreement.

According to the publication, the US and Russia are considering energy and investment as possible areas of cooperation. The White House may consider such agreements as one of the tools to advance the negotiation process to end the war.

At the same time, according to sources, there is no unanimity within the Trump administration on such an approach. Some American officials fear that prematurely providing economic incentives to Russia could weaken Washington’s leverage over Moscow.

Possible agreements face sanctions

A separate issue remains the US sanctions regime against Russia. The US House of Representatives has approved a bill with new restrictions aimed, in particular, at the Russian financial and energy sectors.

The Kremlin has spoken out against the tightening of sanctions. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the new restrictions could complicate diplomatic contacts.

War talks remain without a final agreement

At the same time, Trump continues to claim the possibility of reaching an agreement with the Russian leadership. According to the NYT, discussions of potential economic agreements with Moscow are currently a matter of internal discussions in Washington, rather than an approved policy.
