The White House has confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump plans to sign a bill imposing sanctions on russia, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The bill was previously passed by the House of Representatives by a vote of 262 to 159.

The law grants the U.S. President the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that purchase russian oil and gas, and extends sanctions against Iran through 2031. According to Senator Jeanne Shaheen, among the five largest importers of russian fossil fuels, China accounts for the largest share of Moscow’s revenue.

The bill’s sponsor, Congressman Michael McCaul, emphasized: “This will hit them where it really hurts and provide the leverage needed to bring putin to the negotiating table. It also puts pressure on China to force putin to the table, because they, too, will suffer from these tariffs.” According to him, passing the bill ahead of the winter months is crucial for putting pressure on russia.

At the same time, the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Gregory Meeks, expressed skepticism about the measure’s effectiveness. “It gives President Trump broad new tariff powers and allows him to lift the very sanctions it purports to impose – sanctions he could have imposed today but has failed to do so for the past 19 months,” Meeks stated.

Supporters of the bill welcomed its passage. “People of Ukraine, you are not alone,” said Senator Richard Blumenthal, adding a message to the russian leadership: “Your economy is faltering. We will strangle your war machine.”

As a reminder, the U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill imposing sanctions on russia; the decision now rests with Trump.
