Cyber specialists from Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) have disrupted the operations of one of the largest internet providers in Russia’s Siberia – Orion Telecom.
According to Kyiv Post intelligence sources, these networks were actively used by Russian security agencies to support operations against Ukraine. One of the affected areas is a closed city specializing in uranium extraction, where Orion Telecom was the sole provider — leaving it entirely disconnected.
Sources say the cyberattack disabled 370 servers and approximately 500 network switches. Backup systems were reportedly wiped, making a swift recovery unlikely.
On the morning of June 12, residents in Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Bratsk, and Abakan reported widespread outages of internet and television. A message allegedly from Ukrainian hackers began circulating in local Telegram groups. It read: “Happy holiday, disrespectful Russians. Soon you’ll be living in the Stone Age – and we’ll help you get there. Glory to Ukraine.”
The message was signed by members of the hacker group BO Team.
The internet provider confirmed it had suffered a major DDoS attack and announced that services would be restored by the end of the day.
Photos and user comments regarding the outage are spreading widely across Russian social media.
“What the f*** is Russia Day – when to expect the Internet?” Russians write in chat rooms.
