The leaders of the five political parties in the Greenlandic parliament have issued a joint statement.
Leaders of five political parties in Greenland’s parliament have come together in a strong response to Donald Trump’s territorial claims, demanding that the United States leave the island alone, Politico reports .
“We don’t want to be Americans, we don’t want to be Danish, we want to be Greenlanders,” the party leaders said in a joint statement released Friday.
The statement came after Trump became increasingly outspoken about his desire to seize Greenland – an intention that became even more real after the US operation in Venezuela.
Greenlandic politicians have demanded that the US President stop his “disdainful attitude towards the country.”
“The future of Greenland must be decided by the Greenlandic people,” they said.
Greenland is part of the Danish realm but enjoys extensive autonomy. The island has a population of only about 57,000. It is of extreme strategic importance due to its location, size, and natural resources.
At the same time, officials and experts say seizing Greenland would be a relatively simple matter, although Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that it would mean the end of NATO.
US claims to Greenland
Trump previously stated that the US “is going to do something about Greenland whether they like it or not” because if the US doesn’t get Greenland, China or Russia will.
“I’d like to do the deal the easy way. If we don’t do it the easy way, we’ll do it the hard way,” he threatened.
Trump also said the United States might be forced to choose between pursuing its Greenland plans and preserving NATO.

Greenland will stay Danish, period.
Why?
1. An independent Greenland would no longer be a member of NATO, and Orbanistan would veto Greenland’s accession to the alliance.
2. Greenland lives from the Danish welfare state, that would end instantly.
3. Greenland’s tiny economy could hardly survive on its own without drilling for gas and oil and destroying the environment there.
4. The US could then invade an independent Greenland, a non-NATO member, without any resistance.
