According to him, the US will withdraw from the negotiations on Ukraine if Russia does not conduct them in good faith.
Vice President J.D. Vance said that the US position is that it does not want Ukraine to disintegrate. He stated this on Fox News .
“Our position is that we don’t want the breakup of Ukraine. We obviously want Ukraine to remain a sovereign state. But Russia can’t expect to be given territory that it hasn’t even conquered yet. And that’s one of the things they put in that original peace plan,” Vance said.
In addition, the US Vice President emphasized Washington’s readiness to withdraw from the negotiation process regarding Ukraine if unfair behavior on the part of Russia is established.
“We knew the Russians would ask for more than we could offer… I would be concerned if we concluded that the Russians were negotiating in bad faith. And if that happens, yes, we will walk away from the negotiations,” Vance said.
He also expressed the opinion that Ukraine’s desire for a ceasefire may be related to the difficult situation on the front.
“We can only lead these guys to the well, we can’t make them drink,” the politician said.
Vance added that the US “will continue to work until it is understood that further progress is impossible.”
“We need to try to bring the positions of the parties closer together in order to achieve a lasting peace. We haven’t gotten there yet,” the US vice president noted.
