The United States does not see a military solution to  the war in Ukraine. However, achieving peace through negotiations is currently complicated by the unwillingness of the parties to compromise, especially on the part of Russia. This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a hearing in the House of Representatives.

“Unfortunately, to this point, none of the parties, especially the Russian side, has shown a willingness to make the concessions necessary for peace,” he said.

Rubio noted that the United States has worked hard to bring the parties to the negotiating table. He acknowledged that these efforts have not yielded the desired results.

The Secretary of State added that the United States will continue to play a role in achieving peace. He also noted that Washington has already chosen a side in this war.

“Let’s be frank – we are not impartial mediators in this war. We are not supplying weapons to Russia. We are only supplying weapons to Ukraine. We are not imposing sanctions on Ukraine, only on Russia. So we clearly took sides,” Rubio said.

In addition, the Secretary of State emphasized that the United States continues to sell weapons to Ukraine through the PURL program.

“We would like this to lead to a negotiated settlement. Right now, the prospects for either side to make the necessary concessions to reach an agreement are not very good. But we are prepared, as I have repeatedly stated to both sides, to intervene and play any positive role we can to end this destructive war that is escalating,” Rubio said.

The problem with negotiations to end the war

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Iran is the number one issue for the United States, while the war in Ukraine has receded into the background for Washington. He noted that Ukraine “is in the queue of these wars.”

Zelensky stressed that the United States is the country that can most effectively push Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to end the war. At the same time, he noted that the best option for Ukraine would be for both Washington and Europe to be involved in the negotiations.

Hopefully this is clear enough for the partisans. Though I remember several times, Trump said he wanted to be a mediator, so in that case, let’s hope that idiocy has come to an end.

    • I don’t see this as a partisan issue. If the implication is that Trump is generously suppling Ukraine, well we know that’s not the case. Trump, et al, IMO, have done everything possible to hurt Ukraine. Any notion that they favor Ukraine is misplaced. Whether it’s Trump telling the world that Putin is a genius for invading Ukraine, denigrating a great Ukrainian president, withdrawing all or most financial support, agreeing with Putin that Ukraine secede territory or trying to force Zelensky to leave office are not signs of an unbiased mediator or one that favors Ukraine.

      • Not to mention shutting off sharing of intelligence. And sending unqualified real estate people to make a deal with ruSSia rather than sending qualified diplomats who understand the situation.

      • Its certainly not a partisan issue, that’s my point. I’ll say it again, Reagan used to say partisanship stops at the border. That is why I always encourage people to try to leave politics out of foreign policy and support for Ukraine. It is very important because Ukrainians don’t talk about it so why should we? I understand it is very hard for the Left but they can try.

        • Sorry Red I don’t understand when you say Ukrainians don’t talk about it. Don’t talk about what?

          • Ukrainians don’t talk about the politics in foreign countries, they just want support and don’t care where it comes from. Therefore they don’t exclude anyone because they want everyone. That is my soap box here. I know it works but I have a hard time persuading people that always want to interject politics and exclude certain groups of people. I hope this helps Sir Cap.

            • Thank you. I understand what you’re saying and your hopes. I’m just confused when Ukrainians say they hate Trump, is that a political statement or something else? Sorry I’m just confused at what point criticism of foreign country policies become political.

              • For example if I say Trump is a morally bankrupt moron, is that a political statement or just an opinion or both.
