US to buy Gepard air defense system for Ukraine in $118 million contract

June 1, 2023

The U.S. Department of Defense will buy Gepard self-propelled anti-air systems for Ukraine worth $118.3 million, the Pentagon announced in a press release on June 1.

A Florida-based company Global Military Products has received the contract for the purchase and delivery of the German-made 35-mm Gepard anti-aircraft systems.

The work covered by the contract will be carried out in Amman, Jordan, with the expected completion by May 30, 2024, the press release said.

The funds for the purchase were allocated from Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative.

Germany has already provided Ukraine with 34 Gepard anti-aircraft systems, including about 6,000 rounds of ammunition, since the beginning of Russia’s all-out war in February last year.

The Gepards have been an effective defense against Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones used by Russia against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, the German Embassy in Ukraine said last November.

  1. In other US news, a US republican candidate for president is stating that US weapons given to Ukraine such as Javelins are ending up in the hands of Mexican drug cartels.

I suspect the weapons are from Afghanistan perhaps or even captured by Russian and sold to Mexican drug cartels as part of a propaganda effort to limit US aid.

The headline article the candidate is commenting on is titled “US ‘Javelin’ misses mark: Anti-tank missile meant for Ukraine lands up with Mexican gangster”.

    • I read this trash you are referring to. It is from India and uses references from RT. It also says nothing about Trump in it and you can tell the launcher is NOT a Javelin launcher. Yet you still chose to mislead us here on Ukraine Today.
Shame on you…Honestly….? Not even fucking close. Keep it up and you can spend all your time on RT.

      • Shut up moron.

It is a Republican candidate on Twitter (never said Trump) who is making the claim.

That is the conservative claim being made. Here is what the post says:

‘But now it turns out that the US military weapons that we sent to *Ukraine*, including Javelin anti-tank missiles & missile launchers, are ending up in the hands of Mexican drug cartels south of our border. This is an embarrassment. I will restore basic strategic sense to our foreign policy & that means gutting the existing establishment.’

Again, I don’t personally believe weapons given to Ukraine are being misused and I support aid to Ukraine.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that US conservatives are using false information to attack the current administration who is supporting Ukraine.

        • It’s a sad day for our republic when “conservatives” are resorting to mafia land methods to propagate their un-American agenda.

    • This article, “US ‘Javelin’ misses mark: Anti-tank missile meant for Ukraine lands up with Mexican gangster”, comes from “Firstpost”, a news provider from India. Case closed.
