Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will not be put into operation if Moscow attacks Kiev. The United States noted that the pipeline allows you to put pressure on Russia.
This was announced by State Department spokesman Ned Price on the radio station National Public Radio .
“I want to make it very clear: if Russia invades Ukraine in one way or another, the implementation of Nord Stream 2 will not budge. We want this to be very clear,” the diplomat said.
As long as the pipeline is not launched, the US and Germany can put pressure on Moscow, he said.
“This is a pressure tool for us, for Germany, for the transatlantic community, because gas does not go through the pipeline. This is not a pressure tool for Vladimir Putin – and this should be clear,” Price summed up.
The Nord Stream 2 project provides for the construction and operation of two gas pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany.
The pipeline operator is Nord Stream 2 AG, 100% owned by Gazprom.
On September 10, 2021, Russia announced the completion of the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
To launch Nord Stream 2, it needs to be certified by German authorities. This procedure was started, but was suspended on November 16, 2021. After certification by the German authorities, the European Commission must give permission to operate. Without the approval of the EC, the gas pipeline cannot be launched.
Ukraine warned that Russia could use the gas pipeline as a “weapon”.

Not strong enough. The United States should threaten full scale war with Russia if Ukraine is attacked. Nord Stream 2 should be halted completely, with no plans to restart it, and US sanctions should only be lifted when every last Russian soldier has gone back home. I believe this firm response would be enough pressure to set back putin’s schemes for quite some time, while also making him look more weak and ineffectual as a political figure. Sadly, I don’t run United States foreign policy, so biden’s looking like the weak and ineffectual political figure. The only good thing about biden, is that a large number of other Americans are realizing what an idiot and mistake he is.
Maybe not full scale war, but support by the US Air Force and Navy to support ukrainian fighters on the ground in the event of a major ruSSian attack. That would suffice.
Denmark could also pull back permission for gas being pumped through its territory. Washington should put pressure on the Kingdom.
It looks to me like Germany and Russia are running foreign policy for everyone. US is leading from behind again.
