Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said that the destruction of Russian strike positions near the Russian-Ukrainian border by the Ukrainian military helped reduce the intensity of Russian attacks on the city.
Source: Terekhov in an interview with Reuters
Details: Asked whether Kharkiv has in any way benefited from the US granting limited permission for US weapons to strike targets in Russia, Terekhov says the attacks have become less intense than in May.
Quote: “This has helped. That, perhaps, is why Kharkiv enjoys this period of calm for the last couple of weeks […] the strikes were less intense than, for example, in May”.
Details: He added that about 11,500 people have arrived in Kharkiv from other heavily bombarded areas. In addition, the mayor stressed the significant need for Western air defence systems to protect the city.
Background:
- After giving Ukraine limited permission to deploy American weapons to hit Russian territory, US President Joe Biden expressed resistance to potential US military strikes deep into Russian territory.
- The White House clarified that the permission to strike with American weapons applies to the border not only in Kharkiv but also in Sumy Oblast. At the same time, the authorisation does not apply to long-range ATACMS missiles.

This is solid proof that this decision was right. A ban to use Western weapons on the aggressor was never right. It was wrong, dangerous, and despicable for all possible reasons. It cost an X amount of additional deaths and destruction. Many other wrong decisions by the West have also caused undue death and destruction.
Through cowardice and stupidity, we’ve managed to prolong this war this far, and probably will do so for an unknown length of time into the future.
It’s good that this red line by Nato has been redrawn, but let’s not forget that people had to die first before governments agreed that this was unreasonable. This never made sense at all. In a larger, historic context, whole wars, like WWII, would have been lost if there had been a prohibition of strikes against the territory of the attacking nation. The idiots who upheld that rule, in plain sight of the Russian troop buildup near Kharkiv, have blood on their hands now. ☹
That’s right, Mr. Gray. There are lots of people with blood on their hands.
