US lifts sanctions against wife of Putin’s friend. She owns real estate in Europe

The United States has removed from its sanctions list (SDN) the wife of Russian oligarch Boris Rotenberg, who is part of the inner circle of Russian dictator Putin.

This was reported by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Treasury Department.

In particular, the sanctions list excluded Russian citizen Karina Yurievna Rotenberg, born in 1978 (known as Gapchuk Fox), who lives in Russia and France. She married Boris Rotenberg in 2009 and has also held US citizenship since at least 2013.

At the same time, the US added three Russian citizens and three legal entities registered in the Russian Federation to the sanctions list. The restrictions on them were introduced as part of a sanctions package against a network that, with the support of Iran, was transporting raw materials, weapons, and sensitive goods from Russia to the Yemeni Houthis, the US Treasury Department explained.

The US imposed sanctions on Boris Rotenberg, his wife Karina, and sons Roman and Boris in March 2022 in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In April 2022, the EU imposed sanctions on Boris Rotenberg, but they did not affect the billionaire’s family.

Therefore, Karina Rotenberg continued to travel to elite resorts in Europe. At the same time, she heads the Moscow Equestrian Federation. Together with her husband, she continues to maintain elite stables in Europe, wrote opposition Russian media. According to the FEI and FKSR databases, the Rotenbergs own at least 24 horses. Some of them cost 900 thousand euros.

Until 2022, Rotenberg’s wife helped him financially through loans from branches of Russian banks abroad. Formally unrelated to the businessmen, an offshore company registered to the former bodyguard of billionaire Alexander Kozlov placed a deposit in the Cypriot branch of Promsvyazbank, and the bank issued a loan in the name of Karina Rotenberg against this deposit, The Moscow Times reports .

According to journalistic investigations, the oligarch’s wife owns half of all her husband’s Western real estate. For example, she has a share in a 30-hectare estate in Mont-Sartoux, 50 km from Monaco. In 2014, it was estimated at 17 million euros. The total value of the couple’s assets in Monaco and France alone is more than 60 million euros.

As reported, last fall, Russian opposition media outlets revealed that billionaires Arkady and Boris Rotenberg , who are members of Russian dictator Putin’s inner circle, have over the past year and a half seized at least 10 plots of land in Balaklava Bay in annexed Crimea, which the occupation authorities seized from Ukrainian and local owners. They plan to build a large-scale marina for luxury yachts on the illegally seized land.
