According to senior officials, it is currently unclear where Iran’s response might take place — whether it would focus on sites outside the United States or target American territory as well. Both options are being considered.

Iran already has plans in place to attack U.S. bases in the Middle East, two officials familiar with current military planning said, but there was no immediate sign of those plans being implemented earlier this week.

American military facilities have been on maximum alert since the spring, but the situation has escalated significantly since the start of the war between Israel and Iran on June 13. Defense officials warn that the risk of attacks on American facilities by Iran or its proxy forces in the region has increased to a critical level.

Analysts say the situation in the Persian Gulf could be a trigger for a larger conflict, especially given the presence of US military forces in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Iraq. Tensions are also rising due to the resurgence of the Houthis in Yemen and the threat of attacks on shipping routes in the Red Sea.
