Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov believes that preventive sanctions against Russia can prevent an attack on Ukraine as BBC reported.
“I think that the response to this hybrid attack should also be hybrid. I’m sure that the United States, the United Kingdom, together with European partners can do more for our defense – I mean in the economic sphere, like sanctions, for example. They can be imposed before, not after an attack. This is a very important position…,” Reznikov stressed.
According to him, such preventive measures will be able to stop the invasion of Russia and restrain aggression.
Commenting on the disagreement between the Western partners, in particular, the US and Germany, which is not ready to disconnect Russia from the Swift-payments banking system, Reznikov suggested freezing the assets of oligarchs from President Vladimir Putin’s entourage.
Earlier, the European Parliament passed the resolution that condemns the build-up of Russian forces next to the borders of Ukraine and possible further sanctions against the Russian Federation in case of further aggression. The European lawmakers also call on cutting Russia off the SWITF, the international payment system.
Germany’s new government, led by Olaf Scholz, has said it is ready to discuss stopping the Nord Stream 2 pipeline if Russia attacks Ukraine.
However, the new potential leader of Germany’s opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz, warned against suspending Russia’s participation in the international banking system SWIFT payments as a potential punishment for attacking Ukraine. The politician believes that disconnecting Russia from SWIFT payments would also damage the German economy and global trade.
