This work will allow Washington to quickly ease sanctions if a peace agreement is reached.

The US government is exploring possible mechanisms to ease sanctions on the Russian energy sector as part of a broader strategy.

It is aimed at allowing Washington to quickly provide economic relief if Moscow agrees to end the war in Ukraine , two sources familiar with the situation told Reuters.

The White House has directed the Treasury Department to explore options to ease energy sanctions ahead of expected talks between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on ending hostilities in Ukraine, according to two people who spoke on condition of anonymity.

It is noted that this work will allow Washington to quickly ease sanctions in the event of a peace agreement. However, Reuters’ interlocutors “made it clear” that this does not mean that the US intends to lift sanctions without concessions from Russia.

Reuters’ sources did not specify the scale and scope of the work to lift restrictions.
