It is noted that Moldova has declared a state of emergency in the energy sector.

The authorities of the unrecognized Transnistria on Sunday, December 29, stopped gas supplies to several state institutions. The decision was made against the backdrop of the end of Russian gas transit through Ukraine .

Reuters reports that the outage occurred two days before the expiration of the transit agreement between Ukraine and Russia, raising fears of widespread New Year’s power outages in Moldova .

The Tiraspoltransgaz company reported that 12 government institutions were without power in the area of the cities of Dubossary and Bender. Among them were four educational institutions and a medical institution, as well as a police station and the prosecutor’s office.

Russia supplies Moldova with about 2 billion cubic meters of gas per year, which is then supplied via Ukraine to the unrecognized Transnistria, where a thermal power plant produces cheap electricity.

Both Moldova and the breakaway region of Transnistria have declared a state of emergency in the energy sector, including measures to reduce electricity consumption during peak hours.

Gazprom to Stop Gas Supplies to Moldova – Latest News

Russian gas monopoly Gazprom said it would suspend gas exports to Moldova from 05:00 GMT on January 1 due to Moldova’s unpaid debt.

Chisinau, in turn, disputed the accusations of debt for past gas supplies and accused Moscow of destabilizing the situation in the country.
