Ukrainian troops advanced in the areas of Kupyansk, Siversk and in the direction of Kostyantynivka – Druzhkivka – ISW

09/5/2025

Ukrainian troops launched successful counterattacks near Kupyansk and advanced north of Siversk. Our defenders also had success in the Kostyantynivka-Druzhkivka direction.

This is stated in a report by analysts at the Institute for the Study of War. At the same time, Russian troops are trying to hold positions and carry out offensive actions to advance deep into Ukrainian territory.

What is the situation near Kupyansk?

On September 4, military analyst Kostyantyn Mashovets reported that units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine had retaken some of their positions on the northern outskirts of Kupyansk, near the UkrAvtoGaz and TatNafta gas stations. At the same time, he noted that Russian troops of the 6th Combined Arms Army were trying to hold their lines in the area.

Some Russian military bloggers have spread unconfirmed reports of the occupiers advancing west of the village of Myrovye (northwest of Kupyansk). During September 3–4, Russian troops launched attacks in areas around Kupyansk: to the west near Sobolivka, to the north near Kindrashivka, in the direction of Kutkivka, as well as near Petropavlivka and Stepovaya Novoselivka.

In response, Ukrainian units launched counterattacks on the northern and western outskirts of the city. The head of the Kupyansk district military administration, Andriy Kanashevich, reported that the evacuation of civilians in front-line settlements was complicated by the threat of constant Russian shelling.

According to a spokesman for one of the Ukrainian brigades defending the area, Russian military personnel use thermal coats at night to move unnoticed in small groups up to a kilometer from the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, after which they launch attacks.

What is the situation on the Seversky direction?

Geolocation videos released on September 4 confirm that Ukrainian forces have advanced in the northwestern part of Serebryanka (northeast of Siversk). On September 3–4, Russian units carried out assault operations in and around the Siversk area: in the northwest towards Dronivka, in the northeast near Hryhorivka and Serebryanka, in the southeast near Viymka, and in the southwest towards Bondarne and Pazeno.

According to one of the Russian military bloggers, the Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out counterattacks near Perezyne (south of Siversk), Fedorivka (southwest of Siversk), Viymka and Novoselivka (east of Siversk).

What is the situation on the Kostyantynivka-Druzhkivka route?

Ukrainian troops have made some progress on the Kostyantynivka-Druzhkivka tactical direction. Geolocation records from September 3 indicate that Ukrainian units have taken up new positions in the western part of Katerynivka, south of Kostyantynivka.

According to unconfirmed information published by observer Kostyantyn Mashovets, the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to hold Volodymyrivka (southwest of Druzhkivka). During September 3–4, Russian forces attacked east of Kostyantynivka in the areas of Stupochok and Predtechyny, southeast near Diliivka and Oleksandro-Shultyny, south near Shcherbynivka, Kleban-Byk, Katerynivka, Nelipivka and Pleshchiivka, south of Druzhkivka near Rusyn Yar and Poltavka, and southwest of Druzhkivka near Volodymyrivka.

According to Russian military bloggers, positional fighting is also ongoing near Chasovy Yar. It is also reported that Ukrainian forces have been conducting counterattacks in the Shcherbinivka area.

Russian military bloggers acknowledge that Ukrainian units are holding positions in Shcherbinivka and Kleban-Byk, and deny statements by Russian sources about the alleged encirclement of the Ukrainian Armed Forces south of the Kleban-Byk reservoir (northwest of this settlement).

As a reminder, earlier, National Guardsmen from the 15th “Kara-Dag” brigade reported that recently the invaders near Kupyansk have changed their tactics and are increasingly using anti-heat cloaks to remain unnoticed. The invaders are trying to infiltrate the gray zone and accumulate forces for further attacks.

As OBOZ.UA reported, recently, fighters of the “Felix” unit in the Kupyansk direction successfully eliminated three enemy UAV control points and an enemy electronic warfare device . In addition, electronic equipment was destroyed and about a dozen Russian army soldiers were eliminated.

  1. Yesterday the KP reported that :

“Russia Masses 100,000 Troops Near Pokrovsk as Putin Claims Gains ‘On All Fronts’

The DT covered the same story. A commenter named WJ Crawford said :

“Bearing in mind that at the opening of hostilities in this dreadful war all the Germans offered was a containerload of tin helmets. Their position now is beginning to make sense. The only just end to the war will be when every Russian soldier on the wrong side of the Internationally recognised border is dead. Ukraine must be given every assistance to achieve this desirable end.”

He is just so damn right isn’t he?
