Satellite imagery revealed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces disabled all primary oil refining units at Novokuybyshevsky Oil Refinery in the Samara region, Russia.

The images were published by the monitoring resource Exilenova+.

A massive drone attack took place on the night of October 30, resulting in numerous fires at the oil refinery.

“After analyzing satellite imagery, we can say with confidence that, based on the scale of the damage recorded, this is one of the most successful attacks on Russian oil refineries this year,” the analysts noted.

Judging by the published photos, the AVT-9 and AVT-11 primary oil refining units sustained significant damage.

AVT stands for atmospheric-vacuum distillation units, through which crude oil enters the production cycle. They heat the crude oil and separate it into fractions based on boiling point. From there, the components are sent for further production of gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel fuel. Heavier residues undergo vacuum distillation, after which they also become feedstock for subsequent processing stages.

The simultaneous shutdown of both units means a halt to all primary oil refining at Novokuybyshevsky Oil Refinery. According to industry sources, AVT-11 has a capacity of 18,900 metric tons per day—approximately 80%—while AVT-9 has a capacity of 4,700 metric tons, or about 20%.

The diesel fraction hydrotreating unit, designed to remove sulfur and other impurities from diesel fuel, was also damaged. Its shutdown limits the production of diesel fuel of the required quality, even with stockpiled intermediates available.

In addition, two unidentified units near AVT-9 and the refinery’s tank farms, where crude oil and petroleum products are stored, sustained significant damage.

Novokuybyshevsky Oil Refinery has been part of Rosneft since 2007 and has a refining capacity of approximately 8.8 million metric tons of crude oil per year.

Although the facility ranks only among the top 20 largest oil refineries in Russia, it is notable for its significant production of aviation fuel, making it one of the leading producers in the Russian Federation.

As a reminder, in Ufa, Russia, following an attack by Ukrainian drones on the morning of October 31, a fire broke out at the Bashneft-Novoyl oil refinery.
