Ukrainian steel used to build world’s largest sailboat (video)

Sailboat Golden Horizon

In the process of building the world’s largest sailboat Golden Horizon, Croatian shipbuilders used 4.5 thousand tons of sheet steel and sheet metal of the Metinvest Group.

90% of the Golden Horizon sailing vessel is made of steel. The ship is based on a high-strength steel hull that allows the ship to move in different climatic zones around the world.

“The ship is built of Ukrainian steel. Due to the properties of steel, the ship can go to the North Pole, “said project manager Radovan Nachynovych.

To assemble the body of the sailboat, sheet steel and sheet metal are subjected to sandblasting before applying anti-corrosion paint. Then the painted steel is cut by underwater plasma cutting.

After preparation of sheet steel and thick-rolled steel, assembly is performed on the building site. Upon completion of the main structure and coating with another layer of anti-corrosion paint, the vessel is launched to check the maritime qualities of the hull. The ship then returns to the dock to complete the rest of the installation work.

Golden Horizon is a five-masted sailing vessel with a steel hull 162 m long. It was designed by the Polish naval architect Zygmunt Horen, who based the cargo ship France II, built in 1911.

The sailing ship was built at the shipyard Brodosplit in Croatia. Golden Horizon is designed for passenger traffic on the route from the Arctic to Antarctica. It is equipped with 224 cabins on six decks.

The ship has 39 sails, which cover an area of 6.4 thousand square meters. m. Can develop a speed of up to 20 knots per hour with the accompanying wind. The cost of the vessel is € 100 million.
