On the night of September 8, the Saratov region of the Russian Federation was hit by another drone attack. Local residents reported a series of loud explosions, followed by a large fire in the area of an industrial zone.
The main target of the attack was a local oil refinery. OBOZ.UA found out what is known about the attack and its consequences.

The first signals of danger began to arrive at night. At 03:30, Saratov Oblast Governor Roman Busargin warned residents of the threat of a UAV attack and the possible activation of warning systems.

According to OSINT analysis by ASTRA, the key target of the drone attackers was
the Saratov Oil Refinery. Eyewitness footage shows flares and subsequent fire on the territory of the enterprise.
The Saratov Oil Refinery is one of the oldest specialized enterprises in Russia, founded in 1934. Since March 2013, the plant has been part of the state-owned company Rosneft. According to the latest data, the annual volume of oil refining at the facility was about 4.8 million tons.
Attack on the airfield
In the town of Engels, located near Saratov, residents also reported a series of loud explosions, flashes in the sky, and the sounds of sirens.
The characteristic sounds of drones flying overhead and active air defense systems were heard in the city area at around 04:00 in the morning. Engels is regularly targeted by UAV attacks due to the strategic military airfield “Engels-2” located there.
Local authorities have not commented on the attack on Engels separately. However, residents reported that loud explosions and the shock wave shattered glass in houses.
As a reminder, the General Staff previously reported that two large oil refining enterprises in Russia had been shut down after the Ukrainian strikes. These are LUKOIL-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez in Kstov and the NOVATEK-Ust-Luga complex in Slobidka.
As OBOZ.UA reported, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have struck Russian air defense systems both in the occupied part of Ukraine and on the territory of the Russian Federation. Recently, the defenders destroyed at least two Russian Pantsir air defense systems.
