Developed by MaXon Systems, a participant in Ukraine’s defense tech cluster Brave1, the system integrates directly with the country’s radar network to track aerial targets in real time, Brave1 reported on May 22.
During an engagement, an operator simply selects the target in a specialized interface and issues the strike command. From there, the software automatically navigates the interceptor drone to the target area without manual piloting, according to Brave1.
As the interceptor approaches, its onboard artificial intelligence autonomously recognizes and locks onto the Shahed drone. Despite the high level of automation, the system maintains a crucial “human-in-the-loop” safeguard, allowing the operator to cancel the attack at any moment.
The autonomous interception technology has already successfully passed combat trials in the Kharkiv region. Backed by Brave1, MaXon Systems was able to close an investment round and develop the technology from a basic prototype to successful battlefield deployment within a single year.
Brave1 states that this breakthrough is part of a wider strategy to develop autonomous air defense systems to protect Ukrainian skies more effectively and efficiently.
This breakthrough in autonomous technology arrives as Ukraine scales its “small” air defense network to counter a surging volume of enemy attacks. Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov had recently stated that the sheer number of Shahed drones launched by Russia is steadily increasing by 35 percent each month.
Despite this relentless pressure on the country’s multi-layered defense grid, the transition toward interceptor drones is already yielding results. According to Fedorov, the percentage of Russian Shaheds shot down by these specialized drones has doubled over the past four months.
