Former world chess champion Garry Kasparov says Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine is driven by personal survival rather than any coherent grand strategy. 

Speaking on TVP World’s On the Record, Kasparov—a veteran Russian opposition activist—said the president’s decisions “are not based on rational thinking.”  
After 25 years in power, Putin “works for one thing only—survival,” Kasparov claimed, adding that “the war has become the only way to keep him in power.” 
The 62-year-old Kasparov said Putin’s Russia “is infected by the war virus,” comparing the current regime to “a mafia structure where everything depends on one man.” 
He warned that Putin “will continue the war as long as resources allow,” even at the cost of devastating losses. 
“The only way to change Russia is a Ukrainian victory. Victory for Ukraine means freedom for Russia,” Kasparov said. He went on to dismissthe idea of a ceasefire, insisting: “There is no draw in this game—it’s freedom versus tyranny.” 
Kasparov also cautioned that the Kremlin may “test NATO’s unity” with small incursions, and urged Western governments to act decisively: “Nothing short of Ukrainian victory can steer change in Russia.”
