On the morning of Friday, Aug. 8, two powerful explosions rocked the settlement of Afipsky in Russia’s Krasnodar region, hitting a military base of the Russian Air Defense Forces’ 90th Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade. The operation was carried out by Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Directorate (HUR), a source in HUR told Kyiv Post.

As a result of the blasts, at least 12 Russian servicemen were killed and dozens wounded. Military equipment located on the base was also destroyed, the HUR source said.

Afipsky is a settlement in Russia’s Krasnodar region, located about 500 kilometers (310 miles) from Ukraine and roughly 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) south of Moscow.

Local media and social media channels quickly reported the explosions, after which the area around the base was cordoned off and Russian security services introduced a “counter-terrorist operation” regime.

Witnesses reported a large presence of ambulances and special service vehicles near the checkpoint.

At the same time, according to HUR, Russian authorities are attempting to conceal the act of sabotage.

In the media space, a version appeared claiming the explosions were allegedly caused by a vehicle’s faulty gas-cylinder equipment, while the FSB is working to remove mentions of the incident from the news and social networks.

HUR sources noted that the 90th Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade targeted in the special operation has been taking part in Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine on the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia fronts.
