The Ukrainian Defense Forces attacked the AVISMA chemical and metallurgical plant, Russia’s largest producer of titanium sponge, used to make alloys for Su-34 and Su-35 fighter jets, as well as cruise and ballistic missiles.

The Exilenova+ community published footage of the attack.

Local authorities confirmed the attack. Perm Krai Governor Dmitry Makhonin stated that Russian air defenses had shot down 11 drones and that an unnamed industrial facility in the northern part of the region had sustained “minor damage.” According to preliminary information, five employees of the facility were injured.

AVISMA Plant

The AVISMA chemical and metallurgical plant in Berezniki, Perm Krai, is one of the world’s largest producers of titanium sponge – a primary form of metallic titanium used to manufacture titanium alloys, ingots, and semi-finished products. The facility is part of the VSMPO-AVISMA Corporation, which, according to the OSINT VARTA project, is the world’s largest titanium producer with a fully integrated production cycle, from raw material processing to finished products at its plant in Verkhnyaya Salda, Sverdlovsk Oblast.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), VSMPO-AVISMA Corporation produced about 33,500 tonnes of titanium sponge in 2024, accounting for about 96% of Russia’s total titanium sponge production.

Until 2021, the corporation exported about 70% of its titanium products, supplying companies including Boeing, Airbus, Embraer, Rolls-Royce, and Safran. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the corporation’s products accounted for approximately 35% of Boeing’s titanium requirements, 65% of Airbus’s, and 100% of Embraer’s.

In July 2023, the independent Russian media outlet Proekt published an investigative report on supplies from major industrial companies to Russia’s military industry. Journalists identified dozens of contracts between VSMPO-AVISMA and defense industry enterprises, including manufacturers of ballistic missiles, military aircraft, armored vehicles, and naval vessels.

One of VSMPO-AVISMA Corporation’s largest missile-industry customers is the Votkinsk Plant, which manufactures ballistic missiles for Iskander tactical ballistic missile systems, as well as the Yars and Topol-M intercontinental ballistic missiles. Titanium raw materials supplied through entities linked to the corporation are also known to have been used to produce Kalibr cruise missiles.

In the aviation sector, the corporation supplies titanium alloys to Sukhoi and Irkut, which manufacture Su-30, Su-34, and Su-35S combat aircraft, as well as to the Tupolev design bureau, which manufactures and modernizes the Tu-95MS and Tu-160 strategic bombers and the Tu-22M3 long-range bomber. The corporation’s materials are used in the airframes and engines of Russian military aircraft.

Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence has documented the use of the corporation’s titanium products in the manufacture of Su-34 fighter-bombers and Su-35S fighter jets.

Other customers include Aviastar-SP, which manufactures Il-76 military transport aircraft and Il-78 aerial refueling tankers; the Voronezh Joint-Stock Aircraft Manufacturing Company; and the Kamensk-Uralsky Foundry.

In the shipbuilding sector, the Admiralty Shipyards, the Amur Shipbuilding Plant, and the Zvezdochka Ship Repair Center purchase VSMPO-AVISMA products. These enterprises build, repair, and modernize military ships and submarines. In particular, the Admiralty Shipyards builds Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarines equipped with Kalibr-family cruise missiles.

In the armored vehicle sector, the corporation works with Uralvagonzavod, a manufacturer of Russia’s T-72B3 and T-90M tanks. The company purchases metal forgings, stamped components, hatch covers, and other products from VSMPO-AVISMA.

  1. Ukraine needs hard-hitting weapons for such targets. I hope the damage done to this plant was severe.
