Ukraine ranks 96th out of 180 countries in the 2020 World Press Freedom Index, having returned to top 100 for the first time since 2009.
As the Reporters Without Borders informs, Ukraine climbed six steps compared to last year and now ranks 96th.
“Ukraine has a diversified media landscape and its authorities have adopted a number of long-awaited reforms since the 2014 revolution, including a law on media ownership transparency. However, these gains are fragile, as the new independent public broadcaster’s under-financing has shown. Much more is needed to loosen the oligarchs’ tight grip on the media, encourage editorial independence and combat impunity for crimes of violence against journalists,” the report reads.
The 2020 World Press Freedom Index is topped by Norway, Finland, and Denmark.
In 2009, Ukraine ranked 89th.

Russia stable at 149, dictatorial level.
I’m not sure if the elevated ranking is because Ukraine got better or many countries just got worse. Russian oligarchs buying up the media in true Stalinesk style, and Medvedchuk has at least three TV stations of his own. Why 3?!!! Then Zelensky makes a mockery out of journalists with his one-way communications.
In WW2, in Britain, we locked up dangerous people who shilled for hitler, such as Oswald Mosley, the head of the British Union of Fascists, for the duration. The really evil ones were strung up, such as William Joyce, aka “Lord Haw Haw”. I’d like to think we’d do the same today, but sadly it’s unlikely.
But the fact that the likes of Medvedchuk, Boyko etc, are allowed to continue operating after all these years within Ukraine as key components of the war effort of a savage fascist power is almost unbelievable.
I happen to be a bit doubtful over the work of this organization. I read lots of German news and thus I cannot agree with them being in 11th place. They should be maybe between Ghana and South Africa … at best.
