Last year, trade turnover between Ukraine and Germany exceeded Germany’s trade with Russia for the first time in history.
This was reported by Vitaliy Ivashchuk, economic advisor at the Embassy of Ukraine in Germany, referring to data from German statistical authorities, Ukrinform reports .
According to Ivashchuk, trade relations between Ukraine and Germany are rapidly developing not only at the interstate level, but also in the form of interregional and intercity partnerships, which “serve as an auxiliary bridge for business contacts at the local level . “
“The embassy, having analyzed the data of German statistics – an institution called Destatis – on Germany’s trade with Ukraine, states: in 2024, for the first time since 1992, when separate statistics have been kept for Ukraine and Russia after the collapse of the USSR, our country overtook the aggressor state as Germany’s trading partner,” Ivashchuk said.
Among the most breakthrough and promising for the work of German business, the development of bilateral trade relations and investments, Ivashchuk named, first of all, the sector of the restoration of Ukraine .
Speaking about other key sectors for the development of intergovernmental cooperation and private German investments, he also named energy (in particular, “green”), as well as the IT sector and digitalization.
Regarding the latter direction, Ivashchuk recalled the creation of a separate ministry in the new German government that will develop this track, and reported on efforts to establish contacts in the implementation of digital technologies between relevant German and Ukrainian departments.
“And, of course, the defense-industrial complex, where close cooperation has already been established and where there are outstanding development prospects in the coming years,” Ivashchuk added.
In September 2023, the monthly trade turnover between Ukraine and Germany exceeded Germany’s trade with the Russian Federation for the first time. Trade turnover between Ukraine and Germany reached 840 million euros, while trade volumes between Russia and Germany amounted to 770 million euros. Among the main goods that Ukraine exports to Germany are food, metals and products made from them, machinery, equipment and transport.
It was previously reported that imports of goods to Germany from Russia decreased by 94.6% last year compared to 2021.
