Ukraine is increasingly forced to rely solely on its own weapons, which are critically lacking.

The US has effectively confirmed its intention to abandon Ukraine to its fate , while Europe is helping more in words than in deeds, writes the British newspaper The Telegraph .

The publication notes that earlier this week, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed at a congressional hearing that the Trump administration intends to cut military aid to Ukraine. “The fight against Russia is now Europe’s problem,” the author of the publication emphasizes.

During the full-scale war, Ukraine received approximately $74 billion in military aid from the United States, including such valuable systems as Patriot air defense systems, ATACMS ballistic missiles, and HIMARS rocket artillery systems.

“The bitter end for Kyiv is that its most powerful and richest ally has abandoned it. Fortunately for Ukraine, European leaders have repeatedly promised to take on the responsibility and give Ukraine what it needs to fight. Less joyful is that in practice Europe seems to be promising more than taking real steps,” writes The Telegraph.  

The best thing that Europeans are currently doing is financing the production of weapons in Ukraine itself, the publication notes. For example, Ukraine produces 20 Bogdan howitzers per month, which exceeds the production of French Caesars. In terms of the production of military drones, Ukraine is simply astronomically ahead of its partners. However, there is still a critical shortage of weapons when compared to Russia’s defense spending.

“The deepest irony is that much of the Kremlin’s lavish defense spending is directly funded by Europe itself, which is set to spend more than €20 billion buying oil, gas, coal and uranium from Russia by 2025. As long as Europe continues to spend more on funding Putin’s military machine than on Ukraine, its promises to support Kyiv as long as necessary ring hollow,” The Telegraph summarizes.
