Ukraine has huge potential for biogas production – Naftogaz CEO

Oct 16, 2021

Ukraine has a huge potential for large-scale biogas production so that to ensure its energy independence, CEO of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine Yuriy Vitrenko has said.

“This means [new] jobs, this is independence from gas imports. We have a huge potential for biogas production, which can and should be used, in particular, for heat production,” Vitrenko said on the TV program “Freedom of Speech by Savik Shuster”, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

Among the sources for converting into biogas, Vitrenko named waste from agriculture, wood industry, and garbage waste.

As Ukrinform reported, the Cabinet of Ministers instructed NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine and JSC Ukrgasvydobuvannya to increase gas production volumes and provided all the necessary tools for that.

In January-September 2021, compared to the same period last year, JSC Ukrgasvydobuvannya reduced gas production by 4.8% to 10.2 billion cubic meters.

  1. This is true. Ukraine must utilize this potential energy source to the fullest. Concurrently, it must start fracking extensively and putting in place measures to insulate old and new buildings and to increase the efficiency of energy-intensive industries. If these steps are taken, this could spell energy independence for the country. No doubt, this is an extremely important aspect, especially seeing the explosion of energy prices worldwide and Mordor to the east, which fully exploits its gas station position.
