Ukraine has received seven of the 18 IRIS-T SLM air defense systems pledged by Germany, with the remaining 11 to be delivered later, Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Oleksii Makeiev said in an interview with European Pravda on July 28.
Kyiv initially ordered 12 systems, later expanding the order by four, and subsequently by two more.
Each system includes three medium-range (SLM) launchers and two short-range (SLS) launchers, currently being manufactured in Germany, according to Makeiev.
“However, only Patriot systems effectively intercept ballistic missiles. The guys mentioned cases where IRIS-T managed to shoot down a ballistic missile, but these systems have a different primary purpose,” said the diplomat.
The number of Patriot air defense systems Ukraine expects with Germany’s support remains fluid and subject to change. Initially, Kyiv requested Berlin to facilitate the purchase of two Patriot systems from the United States. Following a Ramstein-format meeting, partners publicly committed to sourcing five systems.
Makeiev stressed that Ukraine’s needs are far greater, requiring at least 10 Patriot systems, with the mentioned figure reflecting the total aid European countries are prepared to provide.
Previously, the ambassador noted that Germany had supplied Ukraine with over 60 Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft systems and is preparing to deliver another IRIS-T air defense system.
On July 21, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that the United States and Germany agreed to provide Ukraine with five Patriot systems, expected to arrive “in the near future.”
