Ukraine Floats Nuland as Possible US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations

The position has been vacant since the abrupt resignation of Kurt Volker

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has informed the US of its interest in appointing a new US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations following the resignation of Kurt Volker.

“I told an envoy of the US Department of State that we are interested in having a person who would be able to lead the negotiating team from the US side,” Foreign Minister of Ukraine Vadym Prystaiko said in an interview with UNIAN news agency. This was reported by Ukrinform.

He said that various candidates were discussed.

“It could be an option of Victoria Nuland when she was the official representative of the Department of State and the Assistant Secretary of State for the region at the same time. This is convenient in the context that you are aware of what is happening in the region. You have people who work professionally, i.e. diplomats working in these areas. On the other hand, it’s what Kurt Volker was doing. He was relieved of his day-to-day responsibilities in all areas and was able to focus on the Normandy format process only. Both options are interesting in their own way and they are important to us,” Prystaiko said.

Ukraine has expressed its desire that this position be filled as soon as possible.
