Ukraine blocks Russian draft resolution of UN General Assembly on combating Covid-19

If the Assembly passed it, Russia could have disposed of international sanctions; however, the document will not be passed, – Ukraine’s Foreign Minister.

Ukraine penalized Russia-initiated draft law of UN General Assembly on fighting coronavirus. If the Assembly passed it, Russia could have disposed of international sanctions. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba posted this on Facebook.

“Only Ukraine was the first among UN member countries to break the silence procedure regarding Russia-initiated draft resolution of UN General Assembly “Declaration on solidarity of United Nations before the challenges created by coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19)”. Thus, the silence procedure is broken. The Russian resolution will not be passed. We will keep blocking Russia’s efforts to destroy the sanction regime”, he wrote.

The Minister explained that there are many right things in the text, “hidden behind this noble naming”, and a manipulation that can have strategic destructive consequences for the system of international security – the launch of process of canceling international sanctions against Russia.

“Nothing stands in the way of cooperation of states for combating coronavirus and overcoming its aftermaths. In this background, the attempts to abuse humanitarian goals in order to place a landmine under international sanctions (…) including sanctions for the Russian aggression against Ukraine are a definite manipulation by Russia”, Kuleba concluded.

      • UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – The United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Ukraine and Georgia have blocked a Russia-drafted UN General Assembly resolution calling for solidarity and global sanctions relief in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, according to Russia’s permanent mission to the organization.

“As it is known, our document failed to be adopted by consensus. Ukraine, Georgia, UK, US, and EU prevented it. We regret that a small group of states championing sanctions-based policy appeared unready to respond to the call of the UN Secretary-General and refused to cast aside politicized approaches and interests,” the Russian mission said, following the vote late on Thursday.
This step, the mission went on, indicates that “it will be much more difficult to give a global and solidary response to the threat of the new pandemic,” which may affect many people, especially in developing countries.

“We would be very interested to hear and see in writing reasoning and arguments for blocking our draft Declaration by the EU, US and UK. We would be willing and happy to spare and exempt Ukraine and Georgia from undertaking this exercise, as their arguments, as ever contemptuous and politicized, would not add any value to the understanding by most of the Member-States,” the statement said.
The mission noted that Russia would continue coordination on the issue with like-minded countries and expressed hope that all the interested nations would join the call for cooperation in the face of the pandemic.

The vote in the UN General Assembly took place on Thursday. The same day, the number of people infected with the coronavirus globally surpassed 1 million, according to Johns Hopkins University. Of these, more than 53,000 have died.

In late March, Russia has put forward a draft declaration of the UN member states on solidarity in countering the spread of COVID-19. Among other things, the document insisted on the need to assist the most vulnerable nations, especially developing countries, and end trade wars and all sanctions adopted without a UN Security Council mandate to ensure access to food and medication. Twenty-eight other countries co-sponsored the resolution.

        • As usual with the kremlin, only half a story is told. No mention by this propaganda outfit about sanctions being included in the Russian resolution, or the fact 187 countries supported the alternative resolution with no preconditions included.

            • Knut, one of the IT engineers at our newspaper in Ukraine has a family member that is stranded in Norway. He is now living in his car. He went to Norway to work but now that place is closed and he can’t drive back to Ukraine and he has no money to pay for a flat or hotel. He is trying to contact the Red Cross but no luck yet.
You have any ideas for the poor guy?

              • I’m sure Knut will have some local knowledge on this one. But why can’t he drive back the same way he got there? The borders are not fully closed yet are they? When he reaches Ukraine, they will let him through for sure, but with a quarantine order.
Failing that, he should go to the embassy or consul for emergency assistance. Normally embassies don’t hand out money, but in a case of force majeure they might have a different approach.

                • He can drive through Sweden and take a ferry to Germany or Poland, or he can drive through Denmark. It’s usually a lot of places where he can get help in Norway, with food or a place to sleep without or to a low cost.

              • I should wish I could help but I can’t cross the border to Norway, then I must quarantine for 14 days there. Do you know where he is living in Norway?

  1. What has happened to the humanitarian aid that Russia is holding? Where did it come from and why was it sent via Russia? Putinazi filth will thieve all of it unless sanctions are increased as they should be anyway.

  2. Muscovy goes to great lengths to have sanctions lifted, any underhand sneaky method will do. Which is surprising for a country that says sanctions are not hurting them.
