Ukraine and France signed an agreement on security guarantees for Kyiv. The agreement was adopted by the presidents of the two countries, Vladimir Zelensky and Emmanuel Macron, in Paris.

The event took place during Zelensky’s third visit to Paris since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine following visits in February and May 2023, the Elysee Palace said.

“We are determined to stand side by side with Ukraine so that Russia loses the war. … Our support is not only long-term, but also has a collective intention, since Britain and Germany have already signed this agreement,” Macron said after signing the agreement.

Security guarantees for Ukraine

Earlier on Friday, Ukraine and Germany signed an important security agreement . The ceremony took place during a meeting between Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

As the head of the German government noted, his country “will continue to support Ukraine against the Russian war of aggression.”

The first country to sign an agreement on security guarantees with Ukraine was Great Britain. In January, the countries  signed a landmark security agreement which, among other things, formalizes military and non-military cooperation between Britain and Ukraine in support of Ukraine’s security.

The treaty stipulates that in the event of a future Russian attack, Britain will provide Ukraine with the necessary assistance quickly and without delay, including modern weapons to repel aggression on land, sea and airspace.
