Two Russian aircraft entered Lithuanian airspace.

The Lithuanian Army reports that a violation of Lithuanian airspace has been detected. Two Russian aircraft from the Kaliningrad region entered Lithuanian airspace, and NATO Air Policing mission fighter jets were scrambled.

It was reported that on October 23, at 6 p.m., the Lithuanian Air Force recorded a violation of Lithuanian airspace near Kybartai. Apparently, during aerial refueling exercises, Russian Su-30 and Il-78 aircraft flew into Lithuanian territory (700 m) and left after 18 seconds. NATO fighter jets – Spanish military aircraft in Eurofighter Typhoons – have been dispatched to the scene of the incident and are currently patrolling the airspace around the border violation site.

Prime Minister: The situation is under control Following a brief air border violation, Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė said the situation was under control.

“Today, an incident was recorded in which Russian military aircraft briefly entered Lithuanian airspace—they remained there for less than 20 seconds. I want to assure you: the situation is under control,” Ruginienė wrote on Facebook. “Our services acted precisely – two Spanish air policing mission fighters flew to the designated location and are now continuing their patrol. This is another example of the successful and coordinated work of our services,” she noted.

The Prime Minister emphasized that by violating Lithuania’s airspace, Russia is behaving like a terrorist state. “This incident once again demonstrates that Russia is behaving like a terrorist state that disregards international norms and the security of its neighbors. However, such actions will not affect us – Lithuania remains united and ready to defend itself,” Ruginienė said.

She thanked both the Lithuanian services and the allies who ensure the country’s security. “I thank our services, our allies, and everyone who defends our country’s borders every day. Such incidents remind us how important our commitment to defense and constant readiness for any situation are,” the Prime Minister noted. “Lithuania is safe. Together with our allies, we control and will protect every inch of our country,” she assured. President: We cannot help but react President Gitanas Nausėda condemned the actions of Russian aircraft and said that this was a gross violation of international law.

“We condemn Russia’s actions and the intrusion of military aircraft into our airspace. We have seen the number of incidents increase recently, not only in Lithuania. This is undoubtedly a gross violation of international law and our airspace. We cannot fail to respond, and at the same time, all of this very clearly reflects the importance of this issue, which we are currently discussing in the EU Council, and the decisions we intend to take are aimed at strengthening Lithuanian airspace,” the president said.

According to him, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs should summon representatives of the Russian Embassy in the near future and present them with a note. Chairman of the PCNBO: Perhaps these actions were not intentional Rimantas Sinkevicius, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Defense, said the incident could have been unintentional, while his Deputy Laurynas Kaščiūnas believes it was a provocation by the aggressor.

“Apparently, NATO leadership knows what to do. Perhaps this flight was unintentional,” Sinkevicius said. “True, a standby mode or attention must be guaranteed. You never know why planes are violating our airspace,” he said.

His deputy Laurynas Kaščiūnas is convinced that this act was deliberate. “Without a doubt, this is yet another provocation, of which there have been many recently,” he said. “Until they understand that there will be a price to pay for such provocations – not necessarily in the form of a symmetrical response, (…) but in another area where they will feel it – the provocations will continue,” Kasciunas believes.

However, in his opinion, in this case, NATO’s Article 4 on consultations should not be invoked. “You know, I wouldn’t rush into this. We need to evaluate this in the context of all the provocations and get all the information,” Kasciunas said.

“But this is yet another provocation, so I think NATO should be more than just an active defense alliance; it should create certain dilemmas for the enemy. If they create dilemmas for us, we should respond in kind, not necessarily in the same area, but in another, where they will feel uncomfortable,” the MP concluded.

  1. Just another violation of sovereign airspace with zero consequences for the mafia state.
I wonder what would happen if NATO planes were to start doing this in mafia airspace.

  2. “Apparently, NATO leadership knows what to do. Perhaps this flight was unintentional,”

Perhaps the NATO leadership has a rubber spine.

    • Of course, they have rubber spines. I think every man, woman, and child on this planet knows this by now.
