Türkiye suspends European arms treaty, backing NATO – Bloomberg

Turkey’s decision comes ahead of Erdogan’s planned visit to the United States

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a decree suspending Turkey’s obligations under the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, which was originally concluded during the Cold War, from April 8.

Bloomberg writes that this step puts Turkey on par with similar decisions by the United States, Great Britain and Germany in response to Russia’s withdrawal from the Treaty in November. At the time, the United States said its decision would strengthen the alliance’s deterrence and defense capabilities by removing restrictions on military planning.

Turkey’s decision also signals improved relations with the US ahead of a planned meeting between Erdogan and US President Joe Biden in Washington.

The two countries recently held talks to improve security and energy ties, as well as increase purchases of Turkish explosives to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia. Türkiye has sought to maintain ties with both sides in the war but maintains some sanctions against Moscow.

Relations between Turkey and the United States improved after Ankara approved Sweden’s entry into NATO in January. This decision allowed Washington to sign an agreement to sell American-made F-16 military aircraft, missiles and bombs to Ankara for $23 billion.

However, differences remain between the allies on a number of issues, including Turkey’s purchase of advanced Russian missile defense systems and US support for Syrian Kurdish forces, which Ankara considers a terrorist organization.

  1. “However, differences remain between the allies on a number of issues, including Turkey’s purchase of advanced Russian missile defense systems”

I wonder if Turkey regret that decision, as it watches mafia land burning from end to end?

    • I simply cannot imagine even for a minute that they think their decision was a good one, unless they are morons.

  2. I’m not a fan of Erdofan, that islamistic radical, but have to grudgingly admit he’s good at foreign policy. While generally being a nuissance for the West, he adds enough positive moves, like the one reported here, to stay in good favors. Even though just barely. We shouldn’t underestimate that old fox, he knows all the tricks to survive. 😕
