US President Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social account that he would impose high tariffs and sanctions on Russian goods if the aggressor country does not end the war and agree to a “deal.”
Oleksandr Leonov, executive director of the Penta Center for Applied Political Studies, explained on Radio NV the meaning behind Trump’s threats to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
“Regarding this ultimatum, it’s clear that this is part of his approach. To me, it means that Donald Trump wants to look like a winner in this story. Unlike some politicians, he doesn’t care much about saving Putin’s face,” Leonov said.
The expert also noted that such statements from the new US president make it difficult for Putin to portray any concessions as a victory.
“Donald Trump has firmly shown that everything must stop on his terms,” Leonov added.
He highlighted another “interesting” point: “How will Putin respond to these accusations? I’m convinced that Trump views these peace talks or peace processes entirely through his perspective — not Russia’s, not Ukraine’s. That’s why he acts so decisively. He’s trying to sell a deal, as he describes in his books, using aggressive marketing.”
Leonov concluded by stressing that Trump’s words must be followed by actions.
Earlier, Trump also stated that he would consider additional sanctions against Russia if Putin refuses to negotiate. He mentioned he expects negotiations with the Russian dictator in the near future. Trump’s administration is also “considering” the possibility of sending additional weapons to Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Trump promised him to do everything possible to end the war this year.
On Jan. 20, Trump said the Russian dictator is “destroying Russia by not making a deal” and warned that the aggressor country “will face major problems” if this does not happen.
On Jan. 22, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump instructed Keith Kellogg, his special envoy for Russia and Ukraine, to end the war within 100 days.

This is like what I often say about putin, he should be treated like a child. You tell him what to do and what will happen if he doesn’t do it. Then WHEN he decides not to do it, HE is responsible for the consequences. Besides that, putin HATES the language of ultimatums. He and Laughrov talk about it all the time. That is exactly the language Trump is using.
