According to Trump’s special representative, the war in Ukraine allegedly began because of the country’s desire to join NATO.
Russia should not necessarily be blamed for starting the war in Ukraine, US Presidential Special Representative Steve Witkoff said on CNN, Politico reports .
“The war should not have happened – it was provoked. This does not necessarily mean that it was provoked by the Russians,” he noted.
According to Witkoff, the war was provoked by Ukraine’s desire to join NATO.
“There was all sorts of talk about Ukraine joining NATO. … That should not have happened. In fact, it became a threat to the Russians, and so we have to deal with that fact,” Trump’s special representative emphasized.
Witkoff also commented on White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt’s words that Trump believes he can get Russia to agree to a deal as early as this week. According to him, he is confident in this idea.
“Our conversations in Saudi Arabia with the Secretary of State and the National Security Advisor were, I think, positive, constructive, and clearly helped build momentum. So I would say I am optimistic and positive, as is the President, that we can get something done fairly quickly. Agreements only work, Jake (Witkoff addressed the CNN host – UNIAN), when they are beneficial to all parties, and that is the path we are on now,” the politician emphasized.
