Trump’s ‘obsession’ with Putin risks destroying the Western alliance | Sir Ben Wallace

May 23, 2025

“He’s going to walk away and he’ll pretend everyone’s bored of this – ‘It’s not our war and I’m off’.”

Trump’s ‘fetish-like’ obsession with Putin is putting the Western alliance and Ukraine at risk, warns Sir Ben Wallace, former British Defence Secretary.

Why isn’t Sir Ben leader of the Tories?
I’m an American. From here, he looks head-and-shoulders better than anyone of any party in British politics.

Well said. Sums up how the West was cowed by Putin and too timid with long range support for Ukraine.
But Ukraine and Zelensky have demonstrated their capacity to dare the impossible in defending Ukraine.
    Hope remains.

Time to cancel the invitation for a UK state visit. After what Trump is now doing there’s no way he should be able to visit Europe or anywhere else. His legacy will be recorded in history as being a conniving despot.

Can never get enough of Ben Wallace. Whilst I understand why he didn’t run for the leadership of the Conservative party, which he would have won hands-down, imagine how different things might be now, despite taking on that poisoned chalice. Still, he remains a force for good and intelligent common sense.

However, the one person trump never blames is Putin!!! I don’t know why it’s been so hard for European to accept this!!!

I’m trying to think of a despotic dictator that Trump isn’t a fanboy of.

Well I am Russian, and I think many in my Russia simply glad that there is American who actually know my Russia still exist as country lol. Russia obsessed with America, ask me about “Putin burger” story 😂 Many in my country know this war is losed. This war is disaster for Ukraine, disaster for my Russia.

Interesting interview with Sir Ben, with respect to air defence systems, I”m surprised that he didn’t mention Raven of which the U.K.have provided five and three more are ready for delivery. It’s similar to the Patriot system, but costs a fraction to build and there are high stocks of missiles to support them.

Europe can no longer look to Trump for solutions of any kind. Now is the time for Europe to act. It’s down to Europe to step up militarily! Enough so to allow Ukraine to start pushing Russia back off the front lines. Yes, that means escalation in a big way. More long range weapons, no fly zones and other proactive military and economic pressure. This will begin to change the world’s perception on Ukraine long term capabilities, signal to Russia that Europe is resolute in their support and will eventually move Moscow to the negotiating table.

Some love to BW from Ukraine.

Ben Wallace. The best PM the Brits never had. Instead they are electing clowns and village idiots. Each worse than the previous one.

“We will Only end this devastating war [this Deadly conflict between Russia-Ukraine] – and establish a durable peace – by coupling allied strength with a realistic assessment of the battlefield.”

    — Pete Hegseth, the current US Secretary of Defense

“A durable peace for Ukraine must include robust security guarantees to ensure that the war will not begin again. This must not be Minsk 3.0.”

    — Pete Hegseth, the current US Secretary of Defense

Thank you, Sir Wallace, for your references to putin’s 19 page 2021 essay, in which he clearly outlined his ideology. Out of 19 pages, only one paragraph in reference to NATO. putin’s NATO arguments is the strawman indeed.

Donald Trump’s relationship with Putin is like the 50 year overweight bald guy who’s been divorced 3 times thinking the attractive 20 year old stripper (Putin) is in love with him while he pays her rent, car note, and child care for her three children of which non are his. A one sided relationship where one side is just using the other. This is like an international episode of Jerry Springer… It would be funny if the consequences weren’t so terrible.

Very informative interview 👍One question remains: assuming Europe finally got its act together and enabled Ukraine to push back successfully. Would China actually do nothing and watch Russia lose the war? I.e. the face? I.e. the face of authoritarianism in the world?

I’m as always grateful got the UK’s really oft out-on-their-limb support to f Ukrayina. I suspect the memory of “The Blitz” and the massive amount of civilian casualties whereas a place like the US didn’t have any civilian casualties to write of during the Second World War make things such as surprise sirens, hiding in subway systems, Ruzzians going on “human safari” in Kherson, etc., maybe to trigger if not first-hand memories still parents’/grandparents’/greatgrandparents’ stories of h as need-down… the unresolved collective trauma of aerial civilian bombing (and Germans ushered this memory, too, obviously, both sides terror-bombed civilians during the big war), it makes these nations I suspect emotionally more likely and readily to support the terrorized civilians of Ukrayina.

It seems in so many instances that Putin has got something over on Trump, that there is some unspoken point of leverage Putin has. This has come up over and again because Trump so often show unwarranted favor toward Putin. The lingering question is, what might this be? The response that it is Trump’s admiration of dictators doesn’t seem satisfying because Trump could be the “boss of bosses” if he put Putin in his place.

  2. Sir Ben is a good example of the British army officer corps. He still speaks like an officer. But what we lack now is mass.
In Maggie Thatcher’s time, we had 350,000 combat troops, plus another 100,000 or so in the navy.
That was considered to be the bare minimum at the time. Disastrously since then, we’ve hollowed it out to such an extent that it would be more suitable for defending the Principality of Wales, let alone projecting force overseas.
We need to go to 10% of GDP on defence asap.
And yes Sir Ben is right, we need to put our troops in Ukraine. Not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because we are obligated under the Budapest Memorandum to do so.
Germany, France, the UK and Poland need to put in one division each; to help with the defence of Odesa and Mykolaiv. Without those key oblasts, Ukraine can’t survive.
Plus we need to provide additional air cover within free Ukraine.

  3. “His legacy will be recorded in history as being a conniving despot.”

Trump’s legacy will be all negative. There will be nothing positive for history books to write about. The same goes for many members of Congress who made his trashy and evil tenure a possibility.

    • A popular consensus amongst pundits is that :

“Trump won’t want to go down in history as the U.S. president that lost Ukraine.”

But what if that is exactly his intention? He said on live TV in 2023 that :

      “Putin’s gonna take all Ukraine.”

He has now said that :

“Russia and Ukraine must find a solution to the war on their own.”

So the only possible help that will come from the U.S. is if real Republicans in his party somehow manage to outgun the magaputler shitheads and get the Graham sanctions working.
Even then, it will still be up to Europe to arm the Ukrainians until this asshole leaves office.

      • I heard many things from many pundits that try to explain the crook. They haven’t comprehended yet that his mind is too feeble and too evil to stand on the right side of history, and his tiny cold heart is too greedy.
