The French general is convinced that Trump’s policy should be considered completely pro-Russian.
Donald Trump , as US president, has betrayed Ukraine by leaving it without much-needed military and financial assistance amid the Russian offensive.
If it were up to him, he would simply hand Ukraine over to Putin “on a platter.” This opinion was expressed in an interview with the LCI channel by the former deputy chief of staff of the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, retired French Major General Michel Yakovleff.
“Trump’s policy is clearly beneficial to Putin. This is, in fact, a policy that is, in a certain sense, pro-Russian,” he said.
In response to the journalist’s remark that Trump has not yet declared Ukraine’s defeat and has not directly demanded that NATO recognize the Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia, the general admitted that so far the US president “does not dare to fully reach the end of his logic.”
“But if you look at all the evil he has already done to Ukraine since his victory (in the elections) in November… He has already gone very far, trying to literally ‘give’ Ukraine to Putin on a platter. But the real reason why it failed is that the ‘weak’ (meaning Ukraine – UNIAN) rebelled. Ukrainians said: ‘No, we will not commit suicide to please Donald Trump. We will not accept the ‘denazification’ that Putin is offering us.’ That is, it is Ukraine that is now confronting Trump,” says Yakovleff.
According to the general, he initially hoped that Trump understood the strategic importance of Ukraine and the reasons why the United States was obligated to help Kyiv: that Ukraine’s betrayal would alienate allies from America and give China self-confidence.
“That was my hope. But now we see: he betrayed Ukraine. The supply of weapons and ammunition stopped 6 months ago. He stopped giving money. He betrayed Ukraine. Even on the issue of intelligence, there is a serious discussion now: how much information the US is still providing. Trump betrayed Ukraine. He also publicly insulted its president,” the former NATO general emphasized.
