US President Donald Trump has vetoed a $740bn (£549bn) defence spending bill that passed Congress this month.
Mr Trump is objecting to provisions that limit troop withdrawals from Afghanistan and Europe and remove Confederate leaders’ names from military bases.
He also wanted it to repeal a liability shield for social media companies.
Lawmakers passed the measure with a veto-proof margin, meaning they could override the president’s rejection.
If Congress does not override the president’s veto – which requires a two-thirds majority in both chambers – it would be the first time in 60 years that the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) does not become law.
Mr Trump called the act a “gift to China and Russia” in a statement.
“Unfortunately, the Act fails to include critical national security measures, includes provisions that fail to respect our veterans and our military’s history, and contradicts efforts by my Administration to put America first in our national security and foreign policy actions,” he said.

This can go either way. Either Trump is left hugely embarrassed, or the Republicans will do a U turn on their original votes. Either way, it’s not good for the US.
Nor Ukraine. Putin ordered this veto, terrible.

I must side with Trump on these two points. We should pull our troops out of the never-ending war-zone in the trash country Afganistan and the unworthy Germanystan. Why won’t Congress see it this way? And, why must we change/cover-up our history by this ludicrous “politically correct” name change from our military bases? This plays into the cards of those people whose next step is to sell our country to the third world like the fat muslim Merkel is doing with Germanystan.
The big negative part is that without this bill, there won’t be an increase of sanctions on NSII.
History is history, both good or bad. You can’t whitewash it like Muscovy. The UK has more blood on it’s hands than most countries, if you look back over 2000 years. Nobody tries to hide it, or remove it.
Most of that blood from defending Europe from naziism; twice.
That’s true, but I was mainly refering to our own civil war.
