US President Donald Trump said he has not yet decided whether to allow Ukraine to produce interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems, he said in a telephone interview with the Financial Times .
As the publication noted, Trump said on Thursday that he was “not sure” whether Washington would grant Ukraine a license. He added that the United States was considering the issue.
“This is a very unusual weapon, and… we need to be a little careful about who we license. We don’t actually license equipment,” the publication quotes the US president as saying.Video of the day
Reporters noted that Trump’s comments came just two days after he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. The Ukrainian leader called the talks good and said the parties discussed “the production of Patriot interceptor missiles and a few other ideas.”
Trump also told the Financial Times that his focus is on ending the war in Ukraine, and added that two of his representatives, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, will visit Ukraine for the first time in the coming days.
“Simply put, we want the war in Ukraine with Russia to end. I’m not looking for missiles. We want peace,” he added.
License for the production of Patriot missiles for Ukraine
As UNIAN previously reported, on July 8, during a joint press conference with Zelensky on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Donald Trump said that the United States could grant Ukraine the right to produce Patriot interceptors. He said then that the company that produces them and is currently building four factories could do so in 2-3 months.
Zelenskyy told Axios after his visit to the White House on July 28 that Trump had agreed to continue working on granting Ukraine licenses to produce Patriot missiles. He said that while in the United States, he met with representatives of Lockheed Martin and Raytheon, which produce Patriot missiles, to discuss the issue.
