The decision should be announced “very soon,” the US president says.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on imports from the EU. The White House chief has criticized the bloc, saying it was “designed to hurt the United States.”

“We have made a decision, and we will announce it very soon. In general, it will be 25 percent, and it will concern both cars and everything else,” the Financial Times quotes Trump as saying .

The statements of the American president increase the likelihood of a broad transatlantic trade war, journalists emphasize. And such processes can harm both the American and European economies. In addition, a probable trade war can cause greater harm to diplomatic ties between Western allies.

The European Commission has already threatened retaliation if Trump imposes tariffs, saying the EU will “respond decisively and immediately to unjustified barriers to free and fair trade.”

Separately, Trump is preparing to impose 25 percent tariffs on goods from neighboring countries of the United States – Canada and Mexico. The White House associates this with an attempt to curb illegal immigration and fentanyl smuggling across their borders.

  1. Great idea!
Drive your closest allies and the third largest trading block in to the hands of your top rival China.
All to curry favor with a country with a GDP smaller than Italy with a long history backstabbing everyone .
