A White House spokesman said a mineral deal with Ukraine remains on the cards, but “the U.S. is now focused on a peaceful resolution.”
US President Donald Trump has offered Ukraine “American ownership” of nuclear power plants, which would be the “best protection” for them.
Trump discussed Ukraine’s electricity supply and nuclear power plants in a phone call with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said.

“He [Trump] said that the United States could be of great help in implementing these plans with its expertise in the field of electric power and utilities. American ownership of these stations would be the best protection for this infrastructure and support for the Ukrainian energy infrastructure,” she said.
According to her, the mineral deal with Ukraine remains in the plans, but “the US is now focused on a peaceful settlement.”
Trump and Zelensky also agreed that expert groups from their countries will meet in Saudi Arabia in the coming days.
Minerals deal – details
The Trump administration has argued that the proposed mineral deal, which has been delayed, represents an economic commitment by the United States to Ukraine’s security.
The head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak stated that the agreement on fossils will be signed when it is convenient for the American partners. According to him, the draft of this document has been approved by the Ukrainian government, and even the people who have the right to sign it have already been determined.
