Trump says he can “understand Russia’s feelings” about Ukraine’s NATO aspirations

US President-elect Donald Trump has said he can “understand the Russians’ feelings” about Joe Biden allegedly breaking a “deal” to deny Ukraine NATO membership.

Details: The incoming US president once again blamed the Biden administration for the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Discussing the causes of the war, Trump stated that the prospect of Ukraine joining NATO had been “a major issue for Russia for many, many years”.

Quote: “Somewhere along the line, Biden said: ‘No, they [the Ukrainians – ed.] should be able to join NATO.’ Well, then Russia has somebody right on their doorstep. But I can understand their feelings about that.”

Details: Asked by a journalist to clarify exactly when the US had opposed Ukraine’s NATO membership, the president-elect replied: “My view, it was always understood.”

Quote: “In fact, I believe they had a deal and then Biden broke it. They had a deal which would have been a satisfactory deal to Ukraine and everybody else, but Biden said: ‘No, you have to be able to join NATO’.”

Background:

  • Trump has previously argued that Biden should not have promised Ukraine NATO membership, claiming this was a reason for Russia starting its full-scale war.
  • Earlier, Trump insisted that he would “not abandon Ukraine”  in his efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war.

  1. I’m not sure where Trump is getting his info from, but Biden never promised Ukraine anything. Here is what he actually said.

“President Biden said very clearly that the decision on Ukraine’s accession to NATO is the decision of the Ukrainian people only, this is a sovereign and independent Ukrainian state,” he said. “And it depends on Ukraine and NATO members.”

  2. Trumpkov’s UK bagman Farage has been spewing out Kremlin talking points for at least 10 years, eg: the 2014 invasion was “the fault of the EU” and NATO’s “ever eastward expansion.” Apparently the 2022 holocaust was mainly the fault of Joe Biden.
He used to be a regular on RaT. Now he’s subtly changed his pitch : although Nato is still to blame, apparently putler was wrong to invade. But never mind because Trump is going to end the war.
That adjustment probably comes from his controllers at maga HQ.
Apparently he is confident he can win Ivan Muskovy (and his £100m campaign contribution) back.
All this came out in an interview with Nick Ferrari on LBC today.

  3. “Russia has someone right on their doorstep”. Jesus H Christ. If Russia takes all of Ukraine, they will still have someone right on their doorstep, until they reach the Atlantic. Rump never makes any logical sense, besides, why the Russian empathy now? Its not very becomming of a psyhopath.

      • Don’t forget Scandinavia, Canada and Japan. Even without Ukraine we are not at their doorstep, we are already in their livingroom. 🤣

  4. Ahem… It was George W. Bush who wanted Ukraine in Nato already 20 years ago, but Germany was opposed to it. RuSSia invaded because their buddy Yanukovich was removed… No actually, Putin planned the war already a few years after he took office. Anyway, low-scale – full-scale or whatever, Nato had nothing to do with it. In 2016 less than 40% of Ukrainians were in favor of joining Nato.

  5. Was this perhaps trumpty trying to be a diplomat, but failing as usual?

Its like a huge comedy sketch, where the Pres. says something daft, then an ‘Aide’ whispers that he can’t say that, so changes the statement to something even worse.
