According to the former head of the White House, this will happen if European countries “play fairly.”

The US will not leave NATO if “Europe pays for it.” This was stated by the former head of the White House and the current candidate for the main post in the country from the Republican Party, Donald Trump , reports Politico .

According to him, the United States will “100 percent” remain in NATO under his leadership as long as European countries “play fair.” At the same time, Trump confirmed his devotion to the North Atlantic Alliance, but warned European countries not to “take advantage” of American support, because “Europe must pay its fair share of defense costs.”

“NATO must treat the United States fairly, because if it were not for the United States, NATO literally would not exist,” the politician said.

Answering a direct question whether during his presidency the United States would come to the aid of attacked NATO countries, Trump answered in the affirmative.

“Yes. But you know, the United States must pay its fair share, and not everyone else’s fair share,” the former US President clarified.

  1. Complaints about Europe not paying its fair of the burden goes back to the JFK administration and has been brought up behind closed doors by every President since then. That approach obviously never worked and Europe used their unspent military defense money on many previously nonexistant government funded social programs that were unaffordable in the US.

You are right OHengineer, had any President before Trump gone public this issue would have been resolved decades ago. Trump is just the first to go public.

Despite Trump’s narcissism, divisiveness, and constant self aggrandizement etc etc his blunt approach seems to be bearing real fruit – the rest of Nato and Europe suddenly fearful of no US free ride has/is increasing military spending to rearm themselves and increasing support for Ukraine.

Why did Donald Trump accuse NATO members of not paying? | Because he’s a lying S.O.B. , direct cost for USA is just 16%, in this article indirect is incl. usa global warmongering incl. help to s.o.b. Israel, with all bases/manpower around the world which is NOT NATO! https://www.reddit.com/r/russiawarinukraine/comments/1auoyrv/why_did_donald_trump_accuse_nato_members_of_not/

  3. usa is a global warmonger, thats where most of money goes, for nato usa just pays 16%, europe 68% but since start always a usa commander???

  4. Wow anonymous, two of your sources are reddit – thats impressive.

By the way Ivan, I mean Cees Boogaart, why dont you go play on Russia Today? Or better yet go back to Russian intelligence school to be just a little more effective and less obvious?

Anonymous all you have to do is look at the military spending as a percent of their national gdp for non US Nato members from the cold war years vrs the thirty years since. Even after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, only two or three were spending 2% a goal agreed to years and years before. Evenby2022 only a handful were spending at 2% level.

Why aren’t Europe and non US Nato members able to arm Ukraine effectively? Why are they out of ammunition, missles, tanks etc after sending what is a tiny miniscule fraction of Ukraine’s needs? Simple, they skimped on their militaries, equipment and stockpiles for decades because they relies upon the US military to defend them whenever needed dor free.
